Presidents Corner - Tuesday 30 August, 2011
Written By: Bryan Parker - Extract from the match day programme on 30 Aug, 2011.
Sunshine and a thunderstorm greeted us at Haughley to add to the entertainment on Saturday as we fought a 1 - 1 draw.
I was a little surprised the Referee continued the game through the twenty minutes if lightening and fairly heavy rain in the second half, as were some of the players who felt less than comfortable in the conditions. Fortunately no problems occurred, with everything turning out alright on this front in the end.
Haughley put us under considerable pressure for the opening quarter-hour, but thankfully they seemed more intent in putting the ball into the nearby road than our goal as we were forced to defend stoutly. From then on it proved very much an even game with neither side able to command superiority, with draw proving a fair result at the finish.
This was also the case in our season's opener versus Ipswich Athletic, which produced a very good match, and had the Referee blown for time a minute or so earlier, would have given us victory, but Athletic scored in that very last minute to even things out.
So two draws to start the campaign is in some way a satisfactory opening, as Mel attempts to blend a mostly new team together, and I firmly believe the team will improve as the season progresses in the weeks ahead.
The Reserves gained a narrow 1 - 0 success at Bramford United for a winning start to their season. Intermediate B should provide a better experience following last year's final day relegation disappointment. The team has two further away matches this week, at Saxmundham tomorrow evening and Cockfield on Saturday before starting off their home fixtures a week later.
This evening we welcome near neighbours Wickham Market to Badingham Road for a resumption of our local derbies with them. They have risen through the ranks over the past few seasons, and we look forward to what promises to be a competitive encounter. Then this coming Saturday we play host to Ransomes Sports.
I trust we shall all enjoy tonight's game.
